How To Channel Negative Life Situations Through Music

How the pressures of life prompted Finite_Sly to compose Coral, a deep and inpirational work of art.
Finite_Sly released his album Deadbeat on March 2020.  The album deadbeat is composed of seven songs. This article focuses on the last song of the album named coral.  The artist wrote this song while struggling to keep a good work/life balance, the stress was too much to handle and he felt like there was no escape from the pressures of expectations that people had of him.

[Verse 1]
“my plans are foiled, I'm reeling
I'm stuck on how the snow is falling out of the ceiling
tryna find a deeper purpose, said what's the meaning?
of this, but I can't even find the source of the bleeding
that's how it is."
“If I could find a secret way to meditate
I'd subtract dimensions, lose some mass, and go to outer space
and if my ship goes down, I hope I keep the pace
crater in the ground and heaps of metal are the only trace."

Sometimes life hits us with unexpected blows, the punches keep coming and do not give us time to get up.  We find ourselves in shock as we try to understand what is going on.  We stare into space and get lost in our thoughts questioning the meaning of everything.  We might find ourselves so confused to not even know where the pain is coming from.  How can you stop the bleeding when you can’t find the source of it? The wound might be so big that you don’t even know where to begin. During this state of pain and confusion we just want to disappear, fly out to a different dimension where no one can find us.  We also believe that no one will care once our presence is gone.  The snow may seem infinite as it falls and settles on the ground, but we have the hope that this part of the cycle will come to an end.

 [CHORUS]
"Pressure
we're in this together
you can keep on running but you gotta learn your lessons
Pressure
healing wind like zephyr
we can try to help, but you still end up on a stretcher
Pressure
I'm taking all the treasure
pumping golden bullion out of the compressor
Pressure
We gon see you next year
End of the line, bitch, we're on to desperate measures huh."
The chorus takes an optimistic look at the current situation.  The artist recognizes the pressure on him at the moment but decides to confront it and channel it in a productive way.  He recognizes that without all these pressures he would’ve never started rapping or producing.  Pumping golden bullion out of the compressor refers to taking the pressure of life and pumping out gold lyrics.  Every gold bar requires going through extreme pressures and temperatures to be made.  "Bars" is a hip hop slang for a rapper's lyrics when they are extremely good.  The rapper admits his lyrics would not be made of gold if he had not been exposed to high levels of pressure.
 [VERSE 2]
"the fire is crackling in a mocking tone
I'm standing in a room full of strangers
I hope the quiet comes
quickly enough to make me feel at home
starry eyed, reaching for the sky, I never feel alone."

Introverts thrive on quiet spaces where they can reflect on new ideas and solve their problems.  They don’t seek for special attention from others as social events can usually drain their energy.  Introverts learn to keep problems to themselves which can be a double-edged sword.  On this verse the artist emphasizes on his preference for seeking solitude and never feeling alone.

"I been feeling weighted, my heart's not made of stone
say it's gotten three times bigger, well then, it's overgrown
and all my flaws are looking unknown
I'm standing at the end of the line, I'm standing on my own."

A heart of stone doesn’t show any sympathy or feel pain.  Even though the artist may seem to show no pain, he admits he does feel the pain of current circumstances.  An overgrown heart can be perceived as a more sensitive heart, a heart that is able to feel at a deeper level.  This is a reference from The Grinch Who Stole Christmas, The Grinch was known for having a heart three sizes too small and it grew three sizes larger after he saved Christmas.  The artists is saying his heart may seem unrecognizable at the moment.  During difficult times new flaws begin to show up and we might feel like we are at the edge of giving up but as all of these things are happening we can still find ways to remain standing.

 [CHORUS]
"Pressure
we're in this together
you can keep on running but you gotta learn your lessons
Pressure
healing wind like zephyr
we can try to help, but you still end up on a stretcher
Pressure
I'm taking all the treasure
pumping golden bullion out of the compressor
Pressure
We gon see you next year
End of the line, bitch, we're on to desperate measures."
[VERSE 3]
"No turning back
time to head home, I feel it in my soul
No turning back
if you go on, then you go on alone
No turning back
end of the line, your rhymes are getting old
and I ain't got the time or the patience to do all that I'm told
No turning back
you heard it before, it's got a certain ring
No turning back
I'm playing the chords and pulling at the strings
No turning back
Preach to the choir and pray you get your wings
I'm preaching at the end of the line, the end of everything."
This verse has to do with pursuing music and deciding to put it out there for people to hear.  There is always going to be an internal struggle when sharing creative work, an internal voice that will question whatever you try to do.  The biggest battle is against yourself; will you turn back or will you fight?  Preaching to the choir refers to showing your music to people that are close to you, the artist wanted to avoid showing his music to close ones at first because he didn’t want biased opinions.

Conclusion
Life can be extremely difficult sometimes, you might feel lost and have no motivation to keep going.  This artist has taught us that you can use the negative pressures of life to create fine gold.
